Causes and treatments of constipation in children

Constipation is very common in children. According to eMedicineHealth, there are up to 10% children who have constipation problem.
“Constipation is generally described as the infrequent passage of stools (bowel movements) or the passage of hard stools. Any definition of constipation depends on how often the child normally passes stools and the normal consistency of his or her stools.” – eMedicineHealth.
Familydoctor.org said that your child is constipated if:
- He or she has fewer than 3 bowel movements a week.
- The stools are hard, dry and unusually large.
- The stools are difficult to pass.
What are the causes of constipation? It is always the food that cause constipation in children.
- They do not eat enough foods with fibre
- They do not drink enough water, milk or fruit juices.
- They eat too much high fat food and with high redefined sugars (candy and desserts)
- Changing from breast milk or baby formula to whole cow’s milk.
- Switches from baby food to solid food
- Your child has been sick or has taken certain medicines.
Familydoctor.org suggested the following if your child is constipated:
- Diet
- Bowel habit training
- Medicine
- Start a reward program.
