A case study from Dyslexia Teacher:

Difficulty copying from the board

My learner says he has these difficulties copying from the board:

Not enough time to copy from the board.
I lose my place. I try hard but get lost. It takes me a long time to check nearly every word to find my place. It is easier in the dyslexia group because I can ask where I am…..[More]”

Toys: fun play, safe play tips

Hey people, November is National Toy Safety Awareness Month! How do you decide if a toy is safe? A toy that is safe for a child may be harmful to his younger sister. So, the Toy Industry Association (TIA) has come up with tips for safe buying and playing of toys:

1. When shopping for toys, keep in mind the child’s age, interests and abilities.

2. Read toy or packaging labels for age ranges and safety warnings - and only choose toys that are appropriate for the age of the child.

3. Be especially careful when choosing toys for children under three. Select toys that are free of small pieces (or pieces that separate or can be broken off), are lightweight, have no sharp edges or points and are non-toxic.

4. At home, read instructions for assembly and use. Keep product literature in case of future questions and complete warranty cards.

5. Remove and discard all packaging from a toy before giving it to a child.

6. Consider the home environment in which a child will play with a toy and whether younger children may be there. A toy intended for an older child may be dangerous in the hands of a younger one.

7. Supervise children when they play and set good examples of safe play.

8. Remind caregivers, including grandparents, of play-related safety concerns.

9. Choose a safe storage place for toys.

10. Check toys at least every three months to determine their safety. Make any repairs immediately or throw away damaged toys.

Youngest mum at 5 years old. True or false?

VERY TRUE. You wouldn’t believe it but the youngest mother on record is a 5-year-old Peruvian girl. How on earth did that happen? The year was 1939, and according to Youngest Mother:

Lina Medina, a Peruvian girl from the Andean village of Ticrapo who made medical history when she gave birth to a boy by caesarean section in May 1939 at the age of five years, seven months and 21 days. Lina’s parents initially thought their daughter had a large abdominal tumor, but after they took her to a hospital in the town of Pisco physicians confirmed that her abdominal swelling was due to pregnancy.

Authorities suspected that Lina’s father had sex with her; he was jailed temporarily but released due to lack of evidence. Remember, in 1939 people still lacked sophisticated technology to make DNA matches. Apparently whoever impregnated Lina didn’t expect her to get pregnant!

A medical history revealed that she had been having regular periods since age 3, but that she had stopped menstruating for the past 7½ months. Additionally, she had fully developed breasts. Further examination revealed a fetal heartbeat, and an X-ray confirmed the pregnancy.

Simply amazing. Full story at Youngest Mother.

Why does your baby cry?

New mothers are especially confounded when their babies start wailing. They usually have no idea what’s going on and what causes their baby to cry. Hungry baby? Sick baby? Tired baby? Or what?? Below are 5 main reasons why babies cry:

1. Physical condition: hungry, wet nappies, too cold or too warm
Is it feeding time? Is the nappy wet? Do your baby’s hands and legs feel cold – if yes, put on more clothes or adjust room temperature. Is the baby sweating on the neck and head – if yes remove some clothes or adjust temperature of the room.

2. Sickness: stomachache, flu, itchy skin, rashes, teething, etc
Check temperature and any visible symptoms e.g. rashes and infections. If baby cries every time you try to feed, it means they have no appetite and probably needs medical attention. Pat their back lightly or give them a light massage, this will soothe the baby’s discomfort. If baby is teething, give it some cold teething toy. It helps.

3. Tiredness: sleepy, exhausted from over-playing, too much stimulation
Bring your baby back to his/her bedroom, away from people and noise. Speak softly and calm them down. Prepare your baby for sleep. Either feed your baby with some water or breast milk (if breastfeeding), this will calm the baby down quickly.

4. Insecurity: mother is out of sight, sudden noise, strange environment, fell down
Give the baby a big hug to calm them down before leaving them alone in the room next time. Keep talking to the baby on the way out to let it know that mummy is not far away. Distract his attention by giving him a small toy or some food. Take your baby out more regularly to accustom them to strange environments. Put a child-safe teddy bear or blanket next to the baby in its bed for some comfort.

5. Bored: lonely, no attention, cannot express his/her thoughts
If the baby likes to be carried all the time, when she cries, don’t carry her immediately. Instead talk and pat her lightly to console her. Give them a new toy to distract their attention. Play some baby music CDs or VCDs to distract their attention. Change the environment by putting it in a pram and taking them out to see new surroundings and new faces.
